Choose Your Writing Tone and LLM Provider
Mar 8, 2025
Not all writing is the same - sometimes, you need a polished, professional tone for an important document, and other times, a casual, friendly style works better. In this update, we are introducing customizable writing tone and AI model selection!

With this update, you now have more control over your AI writing assistant:
Tone Options: Choose between standard (for professional writing) and casual (for friendly messages).
LLM Providers: Pick between Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4o—each with its own distinct writing personality.
Example 1: Discussing remote work
Remote work is a hot topic for software engineers, and how people talk about it can vary depending on their tone and writing style. Here’s how different tone settings change the output for the same input sentence:
Claude Sonnet (Standard Tone):
Some people argue that remote work is harmful for more junior engineers who miss out on informal learning, but it depends on how productivity is defined in the workplace, which leads people to form different opinions about it."
Claude Sonnet (Casual Tone):
Some people argue remote work is harmful for more junior engineers who miss out on informal learning, but it really depends on how you define productivity in the workplace. Depending on that, people may have different opinions about it.
Key Differences in Tone:
Word Choice: The casual version keeps informal elements like "really," which adds emphasis but isn’t typically used in professional writing. The standard version removes it for a more neutral, polished feel.
Sentence Length: The standard tone favors longer, more structured sentences, giving a single sentence, whereas the casual tone breaks the idea into two shorter sentences.
Grammatical Constructions: The standard version uses passive construction ("how productivity is defined") to sound more formal, while the casual version directly addresses the reader ("how you define productivity").
Example 2: Handling frustration in a message
Tone matters even more when expressing emotions. Here’s how different AI settings handle the same idea:
GPT-4o Standard: "I know this is quite frustrating, but please bear with me."
GPT-4o Casual: "This really sucks, I know, but bear with me."
If you’re speaking to a client or professional audience, the standard tone keeps things composed. But if you're chatting with a friend or colleague, the casual tone might feel more authentic.
